Was it really this easy and this cheap to get a pistol?

Yes; guns were that cheap and available back then. And per capita index crime rates were 1/600th what they are today.
Law abiding folks were frequently armed, and criminals knew it.

Cheap-ish… would be approx. $40 bucks today for that little pistol at that price… though no one in their right mind would sell it for that. the S&W .38special starts around $400. The rest of the cost is that there is less of a need for weapons now, so the demand is way down… Compared to 1897.

That’s actually a lot of bang for the buck. Imagine that this was the retail price! That gun has a nickle finish which is something the manufacturers don’t even do today because of the high cost.

The cheapest Smith & Wesson today runs about $500.
